BDF Gets Some Rhythm

With the writing of new songs and the birth of the BDF website, it was obvious that the BDF craze was ready to take flight. But there was still something missing from the sound... As the latest songs were made available through the website in the popular MP3 format, more and more people became intrigued by the whole BDF experience... They agreed that they had a unique sound and motivation to their music, but the music itself could be improved upon. The band recognized that one of the things missing from the music was the sound of real drums. From the beginning, BDF had always been limited to using cheap drum pads, and slightly more expensive drum machines. But never had they used an actual drum set....

There weren't too many people that they knew who played drums. In fact, it seemed pretty damn hard to find a good drummer these days. Then it occurred to them: Mike Michelob had played drums with RAG at good old FU. He had been one of the founding members of RAG actually. He had also often jammed with Violent Grey in the basement of Townhouse 73. He seemed like a good candidate, but the guys were unsure if he was still playing since they last rocked and rolled together over 5 years ago... In any case, Steve sent Mike an email asking him if he would be interested in practicing with the band just to kinda hang out and jam. Mike was indeed interested, and agreed to give it a try! The others were ecstatic! Real fuckin drums! Wow! That could only mean good things for the future!

Since they were in the process of inviting new musicians into the studio for these recording sessions, another email invitation was sent out to another Mike. This time it was Mike Moosehead, a bassist who had worked with Steve at his former job. Mike was interested as well, and it looked as if there was plenty of enthusiasm and curiosity surrounding the possibility of being involved with the BDF project.

Once both Mikes had agreed to give it a try, all that was left to do was schedule a time. The studio of choice was Funkadelic Studios, referred to them by Eric of Squirrels From Hell. (Mad props to Eric for telling us about this place!) Once Richie Rheingold got back from a vacation in Hong Kong, a date was chosen that worked for everyone. With the help of #1 BDF Fan Steve D., the band decided to meet beforehand at a bar near the studio. Their first visit to the Abbey Tavern found the band discussing potential plans and unknowns for the upcoming first recording session over several pints of Guinness. As the time arrived, they paid the bill, packed up, and headed to the studio.

Upon arrival at Funkadelic, they were let in to the now infamous Room # 7. The setup was nice enough: a full drumset, about 3 microphones, 3 guitar amps, and a bass amp. As they tuned up and warmed up, anarchy ensued. No real direction, no real songs to play at this point, the group just kinda jammed for the first 20 minutes or so of the session... Until they broke into a smoking rendition of "Fear God", which set the tone for the remainder of the practice. The guys whipped through several songs, both old classics and brand spanking new tunes, and played really fucking loud. By the end of the session, the ears were ringing, and the sweat was flowing. All in all, it had been a good first practice. After discussing briefly, the group decided that they would all be interested in having another session, and a time was booked for the following week...

For months after that, the new BDF - Steve on guitar, Richie Rheingold on vocals, Rich Guinness on guitar, Mike Michelob on drums, and Mike Moosehead on bass - returned to the practice studio on almost a weekly basis. They continued to fine-tune the songs they had worked on, as well as adding additional songs to their arsenal of sonic fury. These practice session songs evolved, and new songs were added. As the summer came to a close, the band realized they might actually have something fun, interesting, and entertaining on their hands, and considered the possibility of performing live, something that would be quite an accomplishment for a bunch of guys who just planned on getting together to jam and drink lots of beer.
