BDF Gets Another Instrument

At this point, BDF was nothing more than a band in concept. They had the members, they had the ideas, but they had no material. And even worse, they had no instruments. Well, except for "The Cat". A used guitar Steve bought for about 50 bucks on Yonkers Avenue, "The Cat" had a very tinny sound to it and was always out of tune. And the band didn't even have a real amp at this point. The only amp was one of those headphone amps, a small battery powered device which could snap onto a belt buckle, and pumped the guitar sound through a pair of cheap headphones. Although great for practicing (as well as hiding just how bad you might be from any nearby people), the headphone amp would not get the job done for recording a tape. So Steve gathered up some of his hard earned lifeguarding salary and went ought and bought an amp- a used amp known as "Tronix". God knows what brand Tronix is, but it did have a distorition switch on it, and played pretty loud. And now "The Cat" could be heard. With this step in the right direction, Steve began work on some of the first ever BDF songs.

Around the same time, Dar began to take his position in the band somewhat seriously. Well, as seriously as anybody could take a band that was formed the way BDF was. He decided to make an investment in an actual electric bass.  He picked out a nice red colored 4-string bass, and an amp to go with it. And half of BDF's rhythm section was set. Dar began to become acquainted with the instrument and style himself after such greats as Cliff Burton and Les Claypool. He began working on some material of his own to contribute to the band.

A guitar and a bass. All they needed now were a microphone and some drums. A microphone was easy enough. Dar actually had an old one lying around his house that the band could use. They were able to plug it right into one of the extra inputs on the bass amp and it worked just fine. Now what about drums? Well, obviously, drums were expensive and took up a lot of room. Nobody in the band was interested in making that sort of investment at this point, nor did they have the space to keep a drum set. Kolman's short stint with the band was over. He had said he would be the drummer, but realized his vision for the band was different from the others. Kolman parted ways with BDF having never played a single note with them. However, he remained friends with the band and drank enormous amounts of brew with them over the next several years.

The band decided they didn't need a drummer at this point. Guitar, bass, and vocals would be enough to get them started. They had some rough ideas down on paper for songs. Now all they needed was an opportunity to get together and play. That opportunity came one summer day when Dar and Steve had planned on going to Tower Records to buy tickets for a Nirvana concert. By the time they got there, much to their dismay, the concert had sold out. At this point, the two had not been to enough concerts to realize it was easy to just go down the day of the show and scalp tickets. They were disappointed that they were not going to the show. And what better way to cope with disappointment than to get some beers? On the way back, Steve suggested they stop by his place to grab his guitar and amp. It was still early in the day, and they had the whole afternoon to actually try and put together some music. They picked up the beers and the equipment, and headed to Dar's for what would be BDF's first ever recording session. And perhaps, just maybe, they could make something positive out of the day they failed to purchase Nirvana tickets..
