After the the completion of "Sobriety Sux!", the band returned to college to finish the spring semester. The band had accomplished a lot in the past two years, and it was time to return to the beer swigging and test taking lifestyle that college offered. Upon returning that summer, there was some dissention among band members. Dar and Rich had a disagreement, and BDF would not play together again any time soon. BDF looked to be over. As the summer continued, Tom, Dar, and Steve spent many rainy afternoons under the tin in Fay Park drinking beer. They were all lifeguards, and a rainy day meant that their pools were closed and they got the day off. With beers in their hands and rain pouring from the sky, they got to discussing the future of the band. They all agreed that BDF was no more. They would form a new band with a new name. Something German, because it sounded cool. Dar knew some German, he could come up with something. What they came up with was "Das Storben Affe", also known as DSA. Loosely translated from German to English, it means "The Dead Monkey" or "That Died Monkey" depending on who you ask. The band now had a different identity, and would carry on the legacy of BDF under this new name. Who they would replace Rich with was still undecided. Then, one weekend night, there was a gathering planned for Steve's place. The band would bring their instruments. Some groupies were even invited. It would be a pretty big party as far as their typical parties went. It was a few weeks before the 25th Anniversary of Woodstock. And that gave them the perfect idea for a name: Rinstock. The gathering was named in honor of Rin, the Mad Jap himself, and the contributor of many memorable BDF quotes since the earliest days of the band. And among the guests at Rinstock, DSA would find their new lead singer. Rich L. went to school with Tom and Steve, and knew his share of hard core and punk rock guitar riffs. He had also been the lead singer for the infamous Rabid Anarchist Goatfuckers. He totally fit the description of what they were looking for. And so, one Rich was replaced with another. And DSA was complete. As Rinstock kicked off, the band broke out some songs which had been intended to be used with BDF, but had never made it onto an album. With the first song, "Lightweights", as Rich screamed "Lightweights! Fuck Off! Lightweights! Go Home!" the band was just getting warmed up. As their set continued, the small crowd got more and more involved with the show. The song selection was generally of the hard and fast variety, which kept the energy level high throughout the entire set. The performance finished with a smoking rendition of the BDF classic "Mad Jap", the perfect conclusion to Rinstock, with band members diving into the crowd and piling into the mosh pit (well, okay, maybe it was just a big pile of people on the couch). All in all, it was a good time, and the songs produced by DSA were sure to become just as popular classics as the biggest BDF tunes. |
