After the completion of "We're Outta Beer!", the band did not stop writing new songs and working on new material for their next album. During the school year, the band members went their separate ways to pursue their academic studies and enjoy the college experience. While at college, Steve experimented with the bands RAG and Violent Grey, but he always remained a member of BDF at heart, and knew when he returned home, the band would continue where they left off. Just before Christmas of '93, the band was all back at home again enjoying their winter break. During one of the most incredible time periods ever recorded in history, the band went on a virtually non-stop drinking binge for over a week straight. It began on New Year's Eve, when the band recorded a few songs at Rich's apartment with the usual large quantities of beer on hand. A few songs, including "Buddha", "Beer Belly", and "Earth Day", were recorded that night. By 10pm, the band had decided this was not the way they wanted to spend New Year's Eve. They packed their beers into a large backpack and grabbed a cab to the 1/9 subway station. After hopping the turnstyle and taking a free ride "courtesy of Mayor Dinkins", the band went to Times Square and spent the rest of the night drinking and partying. A few short days later, there was the trip to a Ranger game where they got to watch the game from a SkyBox and clean all the Heinekens out of the fridge, with the brief stop at PeepWorld after the game. Then there was the drinking in Fay Park with cases of Natural Light buried in the snow to keep it cold, while the band sand drunken renditions of the Screaming Trees "I Nearly Lost You", changing the chorus from "I nearly lost you there" to "I nearly lost my beer". And the night before the trip to Bayonne, the band wound up at a friend's apartment, drinking heavily around a poker table and playing drinking games. Details are still hazy, but apparently punches were thrown, a lightbulb was broken, and several people fell on their ass. No real harm was done, and no feelings were hurt (mostly because nobody could remember what the fuck happened). The next day, the band packed their equipment into Rich's car, and headed out to Bayonne, New Jersey. Dar lived there at this time with his mom, and it would be the site of the newest BDF recordings. The band was feeling the effects of the night before, and Tom was given the front seat for the ride as he seemed to need it the most. The trip was not that long a ride, but the hangovers were kicking in, and it was a lot more painful than it should have been. Upon arriving at Dar's Bayonne home, and band was ecstatic to find that two cases of Bud had already been chilling in the fridge. They cracked brews, and quickly began to drink their hangovers away as they got settled in and set up the equipment. Once comfortable, the recordings began. It was probably the most productive recording session BDF has ever had, as they recorded song after song with little interruption or hesitation. Classics like "Whores", "Drinking Problem", "Too Many Monkeys", and "Undercooked Gyro" were all recorded that day. Then, while in between songs, there was a knock at the door. Dar answered it, and it was one his neighbors, who had come over to find out about the noise. "What is that noise? It sounds like thunder," she explained to him. After assuring her we would be done soon, Dar closed the door, and the band had a good long laugh. Their recording was done for the night, and they were bombed. The next day, the band woke up to find that they had gone through the entire two cases of beer. Steve recalled passing a store called "Times Square Liquors" which had a sign saying they delivered. They looked up the number, and gave them a call. "One case of Bud please." Within half an hour, the delivery man had arrived. He brought with him one case of Bud, just as requested. Although the band was still under 21 at this point, no ID was ever asked for. The band paid the man, and ripped into the fresh case. At some point later in the day, everything was packed up, and the band headed back to New York. The time in Bayonne had been memorable, and had given them a chance to record a good amount of their second album. Page: 1 2 3 4 5 Next: The Completion of the Second Album 7 8 9 |
