It
was the summer of 1994. BDF had released two fantastic albums and
earned great critical acclaim. The band was taking a short break
before going back into the studio. They had plenty of material still
written which they couldn't quite squeeze onto the previous albums.
And of course, the writing would continue at its usual fast pace
during the summer. (Lifeguarding is a great job to have for writing
songs.) Things were going well for the band. Or so it seemed.
Until....
A disagreement between band members caused some tension. The exact specifics of the tension are still unclear. (Don't worry, you can read all about the ugly details of BDF's break-up in the forthcoming unauthorized biography on the band, "BDF: The Real Story (Well, As Much As We Remember Anyways)", coming in 2002! ) But things got ugly in a hurry. It looked as if BDF had played its last tune together. One rainy day drinking beers under the tin in Fay Park, three quarters of the band gathered to enjoy the lovely day off which the rain had provided. To lifeguards, rainy days were a blessing. They got to close their pool, and retreat to the dry benches under a huge metal awning where they drank cold beer the whole afternoon. As Dar, Tom, and Steve put a dent into the $13.50 case of Bud from Meatland, the topic of the band came up. They agreed that they would continue to make music without Rich. Either they would replace him, or just sing themselves, but he was definitely out. Would they keep the BDF name? They decided not to. What would the the new name be? They decided that the whole "initials" thing was cool. Maybe something in German? Dar knew a little German, and came up with the name: Das Storben Affe. Which roughly translates to "The Apple Cart". But German just sounds cool. And so, DSA was born. |
