BDF Live!
Orange Bear
Monday, December 3rd, 2001
8pm-ish

In a sudden decision over several beers, BDF has decided to make an appearance this coming Monday at the Orange Bear to perform during the "Open Stage" night! The decision came while discussing band related issues at the Limerick House bar after practice on Thursday night. While enjoying their pints at the bar, the band was approached by a gentleman who seemed genuinely interested in their music and beer drinking habits. In fact, the man had obviously been participating in some beer related activities himself since early that morning. The man proceeded to conduct a mini-interview with the members, who graciously answered his questions:
"You guys are in a band?"
"Yes, we are."
"No way, really?"
"Yes, really."
*Pause*
"No way, you guys aren't in a band! Are you?"
"Yes."

At the conclusion of the insightful interview, the band huddled up for a strategy meeting. "If this guy doesn't know we're a band, then we better play more gigs," they collectively decided. Then they remembered that the Orange Bear has "Open Stage" on Monday nights, and the decision was reached!

So come on down to the Orange Bear and liven up your Monday night with some loud music and heavy drinking!

Aftermath

This was an "Open Stage" set-up going on, and thankfully, Mike Michelob actually got there at 7 to sign up the band, because the list turned out to be 8 bands. (The rest of the band was uptown at Grassroots paying far less for their beers.) A full-length set list had been prepared, but the band was told they could only play 4 songs. After some discussion, it was decided that "Anthem" and "Latrell" could be combined to count as one song. "This One's On The House" and "Bitch Stole My Dog" are musts in any BDF set. To decide the other songs, 2 more were pulled randomly out of a hat. It turned out the two selected were "Lisa Smoke" and "Sheena Is A Punk Rocker", two songs BDF had never performed before live.

When their turn came, BDF jumped on stage, plugged in, and were ready to rock. Well, almost... Richie Rheingold had misplaced the lyrics to "Lisa Smoke", so the band quickly decided to go with "Meet Me At The Bar" as a replacement. The band rocked out as usual!

After the short set, a few other loyal fans showed up, mere minutes after BDF had left the stage. Not wanting to disappoint anybody who came out to see them, they negotiated the ability to play "one more song" after the other bands on the sign-up list had finished. After sitting through a George Harrison memorial set and a Russian metal band (who, sadly, did not play "Berserker" of Clerks fame), BDF got a chance to go back on stage. The lyric sheet for "Lisa Smoke" had somehow mysteriously reappeared on the bar, so they played that first. Steve St. Ides broke a string halfway through the song, but rocked on! As the crowd shouted "one more!" and the sound man agreed, BDF ripped into "Avenues And Alleyways" and played it with an intense energy. As they ended the song, they thanked their fans, thanked the bar, finished their beers, and soon left as the place began to close up for the night (and it was barely 11pm). "BDF has left the building."

Set List

Since it was an "Open Stage" type setting, we were told we could only play 4 songs... Of course, our songs aren't that long, so we decided to squeeze a few more in... After picking songs out of a hat, here's what we played:

Anthem
Latrell
Meet Me At The Bar
Sheena Is A Punk Rocker (first time this was performed live!)
This One's On The House
Bitch Stole My Dog

A couple of Mike Michelob's friends "from Idaho" showed up late, so we managed to convince them to let us play a couple more songs, since they missed the first set... if you can even call 6 songs a "set"... For the encore, we played:

Lisa Smoke (the dramatic debut of this song!)
Avenues and Alleyways (broken string and all!)

If you don't know the lyrics by now, well... you should!
