Beer Drinking Fools

"Beer is our Game!"

Beer Drinking Fools History - A Summary The Long Version

Beer Drinking Fools was founded way the hell back in 1992 in Yonkers, New York. The original idea behind it was to form a band that was really bad and enter SPIN magazine's "Worst Band In America Contest." Surely, with no musical ability, talent, or instruments, they would win. Well, turned out the guys were too lazy to ever get around to entering the contest. However, the band started to take some shape when Steve actually got a guitar. Dar later followed by picking up a bass. Rich Guinness was handed an old microphone. Some electronic drum pads were borrowed for Tom to bang on. And the next thing anybody knows, there they were sitting in a backyard drinking lots of beer and recording some really bad songs.

With lots of free time at their summer jobs, the original members of BDF started cranking out original lyrics for these songs. With recording costs kept very low (basically the cost of two cases of Bud, and a blank audio tape), the band churned out two full-length albums in a two year span. "We're Outta Beer!" and "Sobriety Sux" are a little rough around the edges, but feature almost 30 songs on each album! Which means the average song length was less than 2 minutes. The tapes started to circulate among friends of the band, but the music was widely considered unlistenable. But the important thing was that everybody was having fun. Drinking beer, expressing a little creativity, and making lots of noise was a great way to spend our summers during our college years.

During the school year, the BDF members went their separate ways to further their education. They enjoyed learning important things like how to do a beer funnel, how to play Beirut, and where snuff goes when you snort it. Steve met Richie Rheingold and Mike Michelob in college, and the 3 of them became founding members of Rabid Anarchist Goatfuckers. Although RAG never really made it beyond recording a few songs and mysteriously pulling out of a Battle of the Bands, they left an interesting legacy at good ol' FU. Mostly in the form of vandalism. A couple years later, Steve was invited by Martin Stella Artois to join Violent Grey. That band played several parties around the campus and local bars, and Steve credits that experience with teaching him a lot about writing songs.

As the years progressed, the original BDF members began to go their own ways. In 1994, Richie Rheingold joined Steve, Dar, and Tom for the famous Rinstock Festival in Yonkers. This lineup used the name DSA and recorded some new songs that have taken on a life of their own. But this event would be the final BDF musical display for over several years.

In 2000, original BDF members Rich Guinness, Steve, and Dar got together for the first jam session in over 5 years. New material was worked on, showcasing the improved musical talents of all involved. The first incarnation of Latrell Sprewell was recorded at this time. Other songs included Fecal Snow and Can't Keep The Ants Down. A musical video was also shot for Latrell, but the whereabouts of that tape are unknown at this time. It seemed like the band might actually be making something of a comeback.

However, it took another couple of years before the band took another step forward. In early 2001, the Beer Drinking Fools website was launched. At first it was mostly going to be a place for old school BDF songs and stories, with maybe an occasional new song recorded during a weekend jam. However, as the popularity of the site began to grow, there were some ideas brewing. And brew drinking. And the wheels were set in motion for BDF to take on a new shape and kick the music world in the ass.

Richie Rheingold was the first on board. He had made a recent guest appearance at a BDF jam in the Bronx and had the experience with the old DSA project. Not to mention his impressive work as a vocalist for RAG back in the college days. Soon after Rich was aboard, another old school RAG member, Mike Michelob, was recruited to play drums. The rhythm section was then completed when Mike Moosehead agreed to give it a try on bass. With Rich Guinness and Steve supplying the guitar noise, the new fivesome headed into the practice studio, and it soon became obvious they could do some special stuff. All while drinking lots of beer and having fun.

As time went on, the band became more polished and wrote more original songs. By the end of 2001, they had played their first few live shows. By early 2002, they had appeared in legendary NYC clubs such as CBGB and Continental. The release of "No Refunds" was met with great critical acclaim and cemented BDF as a mainstay in the local punk scene. The music reached more and more fans. The website became more and more popular with the help of amusing content like the music video for "Meet Me At The Bar", reviews of all sorts of things, interesting recipes, and other fun things to distract you at work or entertain you while drunk.

BDF continued to roll right along. Playing bars all over NYC and leaving a lasting impression on everybody that ever witnessed a live show. The band did a good job of encouraging crowd participation at their shows, with drinking games and sing-alongs a regular occurrence. In late 2002, Rich Guinness disappeared without notice for over 2 months. The band's attempt to contact him failed, and they made the difficult decision to carry on without him. Brian Ballantine joined the band on guitar, and brought some new energy and creativity to the group.

The band continued to pump out new material and rock Manhattan on a regular basis. By fall of 2003, they had enough material to return to the recording studio. And in early 2004, the album "Put On Your Drinkin' Shoes" was released. With the expected catchy songs and hilarious lyrics, the album was just as successful and well-received as the previous one.

As BDF was reaching its peak in popularity after the release of the new album, bad news arrived. Mike Michelob was moving to Philadelphia. After much thought and discussion, the other members of BDF decided that it wouldn't be the same without him on drums. So the farewell tour was planned, and the final BDF show was scheduled.

The final show was an absolute blast. The show also featured sets by other bands that BDF befriended over the years: Squirrels From Hell, My Brother's Banned, and Defective Skrew all rocked the house as they gave BDF their big sendoff! Beer Drinking Fools played an extended set as the crowd went wild. Beer cans flew through the air, people danced and moshed, fans jumped on stage and sang along with the band. By the end of the night, everybody was loaded and in a good mood. Despite being the end of the era, BDF was always about drinking beers and having a good time with friends. And the final show was all that and more.

So, now here we are in early 2005. BDF hasn't played a single note together since that final show. But we still are working on several band related projects. A new music video was released recently. A Box Set featuring a ton of cool stuff is in the works. And rumor has it a reunion show might even be just around the corner. A lot of people have told us how much they enjoyed the whole BDF experience. And many have told us that they miss it and that we should keep doing it. As band members, everybody is very satisfied and pleased with what we accomplished. We made music, drank beer, laughed, wrote our own songs, drank beer, made some noise, put on some fun shows, drank beer, and had fun. And although nobody can be sure what the future holds, but one thing is certain: BDF will live on as long as there are beers to be drank and fun to be had.
